Greetings West Dover Families,
Looking ahead to the coming week, there is one event I'd like to put on your radar. On Wednesday, Sept 11 at 5:30 PM, the West Dover School Council will be meeting in the Learning Commons at our school. School Councils are mentioned in the Education Act in Alberta as a mechanism to involve parents in the life of the school. All are welcome. Please join us if you can.
Our student count is currently at 249 students. We have done a lot of growing since last year when at the end of the year we had 214 students. Again this year, we are super happy to have our specialized settings classes, Enhanced Education Supports, with of 18 of the 249 students. For the first time in a number of years, we have a grade 6 cohort. Almost 30% of our students speak a different language than english at home and about 15% of our students identify as indigenous learners. We aim to create a learning environment where curriculum is culturally responsive to all of our students and their families.
New this school year is a new science curriculum for grades 4-6. We will working on updating our science teaching resources to meet the learning needs of our students as they enter into learning focused on updated learning outcomes.
Again this year, we will be embracing the CBE Indigenous Education Holistic Lifelong Learning Framework which aims to strengthen learning for all students through deepening understanding of indigenous ways of learning and knowing.
Looking forward to another fantastic week of learning
Roy Strum, Principal
