The staff of West Dover School extends a warm welcome to all students and parents. It is our goal to work with families to provide a positive, inclusive, welcoming, safe and caring learning environment. In partnership with parents, we can provide experiences and opportunities that will establish a strong educational foundation in literacy, numeracy, science, social studies, physical literacy, health, and the arts that our children to carry forward for the rest of their lives.

Today’s children are our society’s future. We need citizens who are knowledgeable about their own potential and who see the potential in each other. We need citizens who can respond to change, who can represent their understanding in a wide variety of ways and who are able to communicate effectively. We believe in the sharing of ideas and in building relationships that are collaborative and respectful. We believe in the importance of working together on behalf of children.

We welcome your children to school and look forward to a wonderful year of working and learning together.

Special Features of West Dover School

Literacy

At West Dover School we are guided by the science of reading to build strong literacy skills in both word recognition and language comprehension.  Skilled reading begins with letters and sounds, phonic decoding, and orthographic mapping.

Indigenous Education

At West Dover School we ground our work in traditional practices shared with by Elders and through the support of our school based Indigenous Education Learning Leader and the Calgary Board of Education Indigenous Learning team.  The philosophy and focus is on building a community with strong relationships, integrating the best of western educational thought with the wisdom of Native American culture. Our goal is to ensure that our students experience belonging, mastery, independence and generosity at West Dover and thereby become increasingly able to take advantage of both the challenges and opportunities they will experience throughout their lives.

The Circle is a sacred symbol of life… individual parts within the circle connect with each other; and therefore what happens to one part of the circle affects all within the circle. – Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve

School Development Plan

Each year, our school prepares a development plan with input from teachers, school staff, students and parents. We review many sources of data, including report cards, provincial achievement test results and school surveys. Based on this information, we create our plan identifying targeted areas for growth. Our school development plan is not meant to represent all of the work that takes place in our school, but rather it focuses on specific areas for improvement.

School Improvement Results Report

Our school also prepares a results plan, which looks at our previous school year. It shows our students’ achievement and progress in meeting the goals and outcomes as set out by the CBE and Alberta Education, outlines some of the highlights of our school development plan and gives an overview of our school. You can look on the CBE website for system-wide results.
